Basics
Rather than having radiators or forced air, underfloor heating consists of a network of pipes that lie under the floor itself. This results in a much more even distribution of heat and is more comfortable than conventional systems because the heat is concentrated where you need it most, at floor level.
Benefits
Apart from the more even heat distribution, and the increase in comfort, there are no radiators occupying wall space or collecting dust. Underfloor heating is often the system of choice where young children are present as there are no sharp edges or hot surfaces in the living areas.
While most radiator or warm air systems require maintainance, underfloor heating systems require (apart from the boiler and manifold) zero maintainance. This is because the hot water runs in an uninterupted maintainance free polythene pipe from the manifold.
Installation
It is fair to say that installation is more disruptive than a conventional heating system. However, if installation takes place during a new build or refurbishment, it is a relatively straightforward process.
Generally the pipe itself can be installed in one of two ways, both of which are illustrated below. The first stage of installation is to lay a waterproof membrane and then a layer of high quality insulation. A method of retaining the pipe itself is required and we have found conventional concrete reinforcing mesh to be perfect for the job. After the mesh is in place, the pipe itself can be laid and attached to the mesh. A layer of liquid flooring material finishes off the job.
